Olivia Smith-Huang utilizes an eclectic approach, tailoring the therapeutic experience to each client's needs, focusing on dating and relationships, trauma, self-confidence, and identity.
My style is eclectic and strength based. I see human nature as intrinsically good. Sigmund Freud said we are bio-social animals. I believe a great deal in listening to one’s self talk. The more positive our dialogue with ourselves is, the more positive our dialogues with others and our lives are. I’m also experienced in CBT, DBT, MI, Solution Focused, ACT, Gestalt, Interpersonal, and person-centered counseling.
My training includes lots of wonderful supervision and workshops, a three-year certificate from the Gestalt Institute of Chicago, and two one month intensives with Virginia Satir, the founder of family therapy. Virginia taught that exploring the self is like mining gold. We all have gold inside of us. That is our basic goodness. A lot of emotional suffering is the result of being detoured from that basic goodness.
Starting therapy can feel overwhelming, but my goal is to create a safe, collaborative, and supportive space from our very first session—whether you come as an individual or as a couple.
My client-centered, trauma-informed approach means your stories, values, and goals shape the work we do together. I help teens, adults, and couples heal from past trauma, grief, addiction, navigate anxiety and depression, and build stronger, healthier relationships.
As a bilingual therapist (English and Spanish), I’m sensitive to the cultural and relational contexts that shape who you are and how you connect with others.
For clients who desire it, I can also integrate spiritual reflection into therapy, always honoring your level of comfort.
For over 15 years I have had experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in a variety of therapeutic settings. My practice includes work dealing with a variety of issues: stress management, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, grief & loss.
My experience includes supporting youth and adults with a wide range of life and mental health challenges in a variety of clinical and community settings, as well as teaching the next generation of therapist healers. I focus on supporting individual adults with addiction (as well as their family members), trauma-survivors, those struggling with self-criticism and low self-worth, as well as helping people navigate a variety of life transitions. I also enjoy working with folks new to therapy.
